“I bought this toga in Trajan’s Markets”
Trajan’s Markets is an extended complex of Roman buildings, mostly destined to host administrative activities linked to the Imperial Forums, and commercial activities that took place in areas located on both sides of the inner streets.
The structure is datable to the early second century, and it’s semi circular exedral shaped, and articulated on six levels. The tour winds on an ancient path with internal connections between the different levels consisting of stairways and narrow streets.
Going inside, you can also visit the Museum of the Imperial Forum, which is the first museum of ancient architecture and exhibits reconstructions of parts of the architectural and sculptural decoration of the Forums. From the entry of Via IV Novembre, where it was situated also in ancient times, you can enter an area with a variety of shops located on two floors, where at the time free wheat was distributed, before moving to the maze of the narrow streets leading to the different levels.
Thanks to the restorations of Trajan’s Markets, indoor and outdoor environments of great historical and cultural interest have been opened to visitors, giving them an exciting and involving dive into the early Imperial Rome.
