Many of the buildings have a vaulted ceiling, which was typical of the “tabernae”, the most common shops of Ancient Rome. This is the reason why at first the archaeologists believed this place to be a marketplace. Now we know that the buildings here mostly housed offices and archives, but the name has remained the same.

The museum is in the place where in ancient times free wheat would be distributed to the people of Rome, during an event that was called the “Cura Annonae”. These pieces are mostly torsos, heads, pieces of heads, arms, feet, and decorations that were placed on columns, but they still have a delicate beauty that will surely capture you. In the museum you will be able to see two marble “lion heads”, which maintain all their expressiveness even without a lower jaw.
