Royal Palace is the king of the Baroque age

Royal Palace tour is the perfect experience to add to your italian holiday! Royal Palace is one of the most iconic destination in Naples, and in Italy!

While looking at Naples landscape you might immediately admire the long red and grey façade of the Royal Palace, decorated in the first floor with hanging gardens. In the early years of the 16th century the Spanish Viceroy of Naples decided to build a modern wide and well decorated residence for his own amusement and for the Spanish King visits. With colonnades and loggias in a classic style. It’s different from the magical fortified castles in which lived the Angevis and Aragonese Kings.

The Royal Palace was planned, and partially built, by Domenico Fontana, according to a building model of the late Renaissance. The Façade, built in bricks and piperno stones, is an example of construction and ornamental themes of roman culture; such as granite columns, latin inscriptions, doric, ionic and Corinthian pediments and pilaster strips.

The interior is developed around the squared courtyard and it’s surrounded by an Archer porch in piperno stones that in the upper floor correspond to the ambulatory, a covered porch and on which the rooms expose.

Two more courts communicate with the rectangular courtyard: The courtyard of the Belvedere and the bus, creating with lined corridors and modular repetitions of architectural elements, the most amazing effects of endless directions. The Esplanade towards Vesuvius is connected to the bastions of the Angevin through a system of arched bridges, traces of the functional link between the palace and the fortress with the arsenal of artillery.

The Bourbon porcelain Factory was initially located in a pavilion next door and the entire building was driven by the ancillary court life as the Royal Printing House, the Royal Tapestry factory (after it was moved from San Carlo alle Mortelle) , the Palatine Accademia of the seventeenth century, the royal chapel, the offices of the tapestries, the military guards, the lodgings and the chief delegate of all the staff.

For three centuries, from 1600 to 1946, the Royal Palace was the seat of the monarchy of Naples and South Italy. Initially inhabited by the Viceroy of Spain and Switzerland, it became the home of the Borbon dynasty and the Savoia’s in the end.

Since 1919 the Royal Palace has become the location of Museums of historical landmarks and National Library, it plays, therefore, a different role, a cultural role, in the life of the city.
