The Lake Como is an ancient lake of glacial origins, located 80 kilometers far from Milan. With an area of 146 square kilometers, Lake Como is the third biggest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. The Lake Como is the deepest lake in Italy (it reaches 418 meters of depth) and the fifth in Europe. It is recognizable by its unique upside down ‘Y’ shape and encompasses 3 towns: Colico, at its northern extremity, and the cities of Como and Lecco, at the ends of the southern branches, the first in the west and the latter in the east....

“When you write the story of two happy lovers, let the story be set on the banks of Lake Como” – Franz Liszt

In 2014, the Huffington Post named the Lake Como “the most beautiful lake in the world” thanks to its microclimate.

The Lake Como, whose banks were inhabited since prehistoric times, has always fascinated many artists and travelers across the centuries.

Stendhal visited the lake back in the XVIII century, as well as Goethe during its Grand Tour, and Alessandro Manzoni set the beginning of its masterpiece “I promessi sposi” in Lecco.

A large number of villas placed on the banks date back to the XVI century and, some of them have been converted into grand hotel or mansions of famous Hollywood actors. The Lake has been also the movie set for several movies, such as Hitchcock’s “The pleasure garden” in 1925, “Star Wars- Episode II” in 2002, and “Casino Royale” in 2006.

The lakefront around Lake Como is flat and entirely accessible. Moreover, it is possible to visit the Lake Como by taking accessible boats, accessible hydrofoils, and accessible ferryboats.

Located halfway between Como and Lecco, the accessible city of Bellagio, with its 3600 inhabitants, earned the epithet of “the treasure of the Lake Como”, thanks to its strategic position in the midst of hills, the Alps and the lake.

A must-see in Bellagio is the accessible Basilica di San Giacomo. Built in the XII century, this church is in Lombard – Romanesque style. It is characterized by a Latin cross plan and it has three naves. To the left of the façade, there is a bell tower. The Basilica houses mosaics from the beginning of the 20th century, a crucifix (contemporary to the construction of the church), and a piece by Perugino, the “Deposizione di Gesù”, which dates back between the XV and the XVI century.

An additional not-to-miss church is the accessible Chiesa di San Giorgio, built at the same time of the accessible Basilica di San Giacomo, which hosts the “Madonna della cintura”, a wooden statue that represents the symbol of the city and that every year, the 2nd Sunday of September, parades through the city.
