A tour in the city of the towers. San Gimignano is the only example in the world of a medieval city with original fortification and towers and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The towers that once composed it were 72 but now are only thirteen and they give character to the elegant town in the province of Siena. His worldwide fame, is due not only to the particular architecture, but also to (especially) the wealth of art and Vernaccia di San Gimignano a fine white wine produced here.
The Duomo, completed in 1148 is considered one of the most prestigious museums of Tuscany; it contains frescoes by Florentine School such as St. Sebastian (Benozzo Gozzoli), Stories of Santa Fina (Domenico Ghirlandaio) and wooden statues by Jacopo della Quercia. Also interesting is the Town Hall, which formerly housed the mayor and currently houses the civic museum and art gallery containing masterpieces by artists such as Pinturicchio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Filippino Lippi, Domenico di Michelino, Pier Francesco Fiorentino. Also inside the Town Hall you can visit the hall of Dante with the Majesty of Lippo Memmi and access to the Tower of the Podestà or Torre Grossa, 54m high and built in 1311. Through the narrow street an alleys you can feel the medieval atmosphere, it’s a trip in the past!
