This visit is dedicated to one of the world’s most famous art galleries, the Galleria Borghese.
This magnificent Villa was built as an art temple by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in 1600 to house his private collection of masterpieces. It has among his pieces works by Raphael, Bernini, Caravaggio, just to name a few of the most important. The cardinal created a country villa for himself and to guard his art collection with two hundred hectares of park. Villa Borghese by the name of its founder was built with the intent to combine art and nature.
The Villa then became the home of Napoleon’s sister, the famous Pauline , when she married one of the members of the Borghese family. The famous sculptor Antonio Canova sculpted her features in an extraordinary marble sculpture, in the likeness of Venus, which is now one of the main attractions of the gallery. It is the only place in the world where 6 Caravaggio paintings are together. In addition to sculptures of the aforementioned Bernini there are other masterpieces that shouldn’t be missed.
Closed on Mondays and on national holiday days.
