San Filippo Neri was a priest who, in the days of carnival of the year 1551, distracted the faithful from the impure celebrations of those days and brought them on a 20km pilgrimage to Rome.

During the years, this tradition became very important and observed by many faithful. Today it is customary to do this religious pilgrimage for 2 nights two times a year, in September and in May!...

The Tour we offer is not the complete pilgrimage of 20 km, but it will take only a half day, and includes the visit of the most important and beautiful churches of Rome. This Tour is called “the Tour of the Seven Churches”, which includes the stages of the ancient pilgrimage of “St. Filippo Neri”. He initially embarked on this journey in solitude or with some occasional traveling companion. Then, in 1559 it became an actual religious custom for the Roman people. Our Seven Churches Tour retraces the key points of this religious journey and our guide will also give you a historical and religious background regarding the Seven Churches that we are going to visit.

This Seven Churches Tour includes the visits of the four patriarchal Basilicas of Rome: “San Peter’s Basilica” located in the outstanding “San Peter’s Square” and the masterpieces it protects inside, made by the main artists that worked in Rome, as Michelangelo, Bernini, Raphael the painter. Later, our guide will lead you to the “Basilica of Saint Mary”, the major first Basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary with the religious relics of “The Manger” inside, and the most beautiful and ancient mosaics of his decoration. The Seven Churches Tour includes the beautiful “Basilica of Saint Paul outside the Walls”, with his cloister and the mosaics which depict the portrait of all popes until now and “The Basilica of San John in Lateran” which keeps the statues of the 12 apostles inside. Last but not least, the other three churches might be less-known but definitely a must-see: “San Sebastian outside the Walls” built over the “Catacombs of St. Sebastian”, where inside you can see the “Salvator Mundi” (last work of “Gian Lorenzo Bernini”), the church of “Holy Cross in Jerusalem” which keeps “Pieces of the Holy Cross”, relics from the “crown of thorns” which the Romans placed on the head of Jesus Christ when he was crucified, and the church of “Saint Lawrence outside the Walls”, built right in front of the “Verano”, the biggest cemetery of Rome.
