Lake Braies is the largest lake in the Dolomites and for 10 years it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage. The main characteristic is its emerald color which in summer reflects the pines that surround it. It is possible to sail on the lake with small wooden rowing boats and it is also the right place for those who love trekking thanks to the many paths to follow, cycle paths and climbing walls: all of them overlooking a fabulous scenery! In winter the lake is covered with a thick layer of ice that allows tourists to skate over it. There is a legend about this lake: the high mountain that frames the lake, called in German “Torberg” was once the door (Tor) of the underground kingdom of the Fanes, a people of the Ladin mythology that every year, during a full moon night, rises from the mountain through a huge natural hole dug into the rock and travels by boat around the lake of Braies, led by their queen and Lujanta, a mythical heroine.
