An amazing old erotic roman fresco has been discovered in one of the most famous ancient Italian city in the world, Pompeii. YESTERDAY, Massimo Osanna announced it to the Italian news agency ANSA and declared “Leda watches the spectator with a sensuality that’s absolutely pronounced,”. In fact, the artwork, found in an ancient Pompeii bedroom, portrays the legendary sensual scene of Jupiter taking the form of a swan to impregnate Spartan queen Leda. Moreover, the fresco’s details include a depiction of Leda protecting the swan with her cloak as the bird sits on her lap. This amazing high quality fresco, with vivid colours, is collocated in a bedroom near the entranceway of an upscale domus.
Leda is a famous mythological Greek figure and it is known around the world because of its legend. According to it, Zeus in form of a swan, seduced the mortal woman Leda and from their union born the legitimate and illegitimate sons of the god.
This amazing high quality fresco, with vivid colours, is collocated in a bedroom near the entranceway of an upscale domus. It is not the first time that the legend of Leda was represented. In fact, the figure of Leda being impregnated by Zeus, in swan form, was a common home decoration theme in the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both destroyed in A.D.79 by Vesuvio’s eruption.
This unexpected archaeological discovery is a real breakthrough towards a new system of analysis.
