Pisa has more than 20 historic accessible churches, medieval palaces and bridges across the Arno river. The spectacular Piazza dei Miracoli, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is undoubtedly a must for anyone visiting Tuscany. The museum route through the Baptistery, the Cathedral, the famous Leaning Tower, that you can climb up and from the top, you will admire from a unique point of view the spectacular city, and the monumental Camposanto.
Piazza dei Miracoli can be reached easily; the large parking near the square will make the visit easier, which can start along the perimeter of the Baptistery and the Cathedral. The entrance in Camposanto is welcomed by the beauty of the monumental tombs, by the wealth of frescoes and works from the Etruscan and medieval periods, which is a sort of art gallery.
The Opera Museums of the Duomo houses reproductions, models and documents relating to the construction phases of the architectural complex, as well as sections dedicated to Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman antiquities.
In the Sinopie Museum, there are the preparatory drawings of the frescoes of the Monumental Cemetery; among them the famous “Triumph of death” by Buffalmacco, the “Crucifixion” by Francesco Traini and some works by Benozzo Gozzoli.
In Piazza dei Miracoli you will be able to see the Cathedral (Santa Maria Assunta), is the perfect blend of classical tradition and Norman, Byzantine, early Christian and Arabic art. As well as Pisa’s Baptistery, the biggest one in Italy. And then the Monumental Cemetery, once, burial site of the most important Pisan people and where Etruscan, Roman, Medieval and last century’s artworks were preserved.
If you want to spend a beautiful night, you must spend time along the “Lungarni”: streets that coast the Arno river. These streets contain some of the most important historical buildings of the city, meeting points for young people and tourists. You don’t have to miss Piazza delle Vettovaglie and Piazza dei Cavalieri, where you can find Palazzo della Carovana. This Palace is decorated with allegorical figures and zodiac signs by Giorgio Vasari. The Palazzo dell’orologio with its “Torre della fame” (The hunger Tower), where the count Ugolino Della Gherardesca was imprisoned inside and died after few mouths for lack of food. As Dante Alighieri has written in the “Divine Comedy”.
