Rome in 1944 Tour
This historical tour will take you to the sites where the Italian partisans fought to prepare the entry of the allied troops in Rome.
You will visit the SS headquarters and the Museo Storico della Liberazione in via Tasso, and the prison where people considered enemies of Nazi Germany were tortured and killed by the SS troops. You will go to Via Rasella where, on March 23rd 1944, the Italian partisans killed 32 SS soldiers causing the retaliation of General Kappler, who ordered the execution of 320 Italian citizens in the Fosse Ardeatine. The latter is the site of one of the most brutal massacres of World War II, where, on March 24th 1944, an SS firing squad killed 320 Italian citizens, 10 for each SS soldier killed in the attack of via Rasella. After that we will go to visit the Italian most important air-raid shelter system, which was built between 1940 and 1943 to protect Benito Mussolini and his family. It is made up by three underground locations in Villa Torlonia, the private residence of Duce in Rome: a cellar – shelter, an underground bunker in the Casino Nobile and an air-raid shelter. The bunker has never been completed or used by Mussolini, because he was overthrown and arrested on 25th July 1943.
