Oratory of Gonfalone
The “Oratory of Gonfalone” is a “unicum” for its decoration paintings, it’s defined as “the pearl of Roman Mannerism” and is also known as the “Sistine Chapel of Mannerism.”
The pictorial cycle entirely adorning the walls is a set of 12 frescos named “Stories of the Passion of Christ”. There’s also a magnificent wooden ceiling where, engraved, stands the Virgin with Saints Peter and Paul.
The Oratory of Gonfalone, “the Church of Sts Peter and Paul,” is a deconsecrated church since 1960, seat of the Roman Polyphonic Choir here is where concerts take place regularly. The term “gonfalone” (flag) refers to the fact that the Confraternity normally raised the flag of the Pope to emphasize his sovereignty over Rome.
In the dungeons of the oratory there are the remains of the former church of St. Lucia Vecchia on which the oratory was rebuilt, and that the Confraternity used as a graveyard.
It is not possible to make the tour nto available on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays.
