Jewish Ghetto – Rome
A tour to escape the traffic and explore the alleys of the old town. This tour will take you on a pleasant and relaxing walk through the Jewish Ghetto, close to the Tiber River.
The Roman Ghetto was established in 1555 for those individuals who had not yet converted to Catholicism and were therefore ordered to live in a district isolated from the Christians. In 1861, when we had the unification of Italy, the walls of the Ghetto were demolished. It was not until the Unification of Italy in 1870 that the Jews finally acquired equal rights. Today, this quaint area is full of restaurants, shops and cafés.
You will visit the lovely Piazza Mattei, with its famous fountain of “tartarughe”, representing the heart of the Jewish area, together with the ruins in the Portico d’Ottavia near the Synagogue that can be visited with its Museum.
