Uffizi Gallery Tour
Uffizi is one of the greatest museums in the world for its extraordinary collections of paintings and ancient statues from the fourteenth century; it contains some absolute masterpieces of Renaissance art of all time.
Just remember the names of Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Fra Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo and Caravaggio.
Also important are the collections of German, Dutch and Flemish that include: Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens.
The Gallery is located on the top floor of a large building constructed between 1560 and 1580; designed by Giorgio Vasari as headquarters for the administrative offices of the Tuscan State it was built at the behest of Grand Duke Francesco I and enriched by the contributions of many members of the Medici family, passionate collectors of paintings, sculptures and art objects.
It was reorganized and expanded under the Lorraine dynasty, succeeding the Medici, and later by the Italian State.
Other important collections inside the Uffizi are the Contini Bonacossi Collection and the Prints and Drawings.
The museum contains in its interiors the so called Vasari Corridor: a suspended corridor achieved by Vasari in 1565, that connects the building of Uffizi with Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti. Here there are exhibited very important collections of paintings of the seventeenth century and the collection of Self Portraits.
The tour proceeds to the Cathedral with its bell tower erected by Giotto and the famous baptistery, reaching the Ponte Vecchio, entirely occupied by shops of gold and jewelry craftsmen. Later on we will continue discovering the history of the Palazzo Vecchio, the seat of political power, and Piazza Signoria, the center of social life, built on top of the ruins of some houses of the thirteenth century with the magnificent loggia.
