Archaeological Museum Tour – Naples
The collection includes engraved gems of the Farnese, specimens aged Greek, Roman and Renaissance period, epigraphy, with a wealthy history of the archaeological sites of Ancient Greece. The Egyptian section, the mosaic section consisting of fragments of mosaic floors and some wall surfaces coming mainly from the excavations of Pompei, Herculaneum and Stabia. Numerous marble sculptures, bronze and fragments of wall paintings on display come from the famous suburban Villa Herculaneum called “Papyrus , a wide range of objects such as vases, pottery, funerary paintings, gold, bronze, glass and coins.
The Library hosted the exhibition of the sundial Bourbon. In 1781, it was restored and decorated in time for Peter and Giovanni Evangelista Draghi. On the floor is placed a sundial with valuable drawings of the zodiac created in the late ‘700. The topographic section will soon occupy several rooms and will document the history of the main sites of ancient Campania. The rooms currently open are dedicated to prehistory and early history of the Gulf of Naples and inland Campania.
The museum also houses a model of Pompei entirely in cork, made between 1861 and 1879, unique specimen for the finishing detail of every particular, has in some cases the only reproduction of paintings and mosaics otherwise lost. And it’s possible to admire the large collection of silver items, mostly from households of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
