Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) was one of the main sculptor and architect in Roman artistic life
Bernini is undoubtedly the artist who most contributed to spreading the Baroque style in the Roman environment, a style that became the matrix of every urban transformation of the eternal city throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. One of the most remarkable examples of his art is “The Ecstasy of St. Teresa” in Santa Maria della Vittoria.
The tour includes the visit of churches and squares with sculptures and fountains made by the great master, like Santa Maria della Vittoria, Navona Square, Spanish Square, Barberini Square, Santa Maria del popolo, Santa Maria sopra Minerva and St. Peter. Then Galleria Borghese, where we can admire some works by Bernini: Enea, the Rape of Proserpina (or abduction), Apollo and Daphne, the David, to name a few, along with other masterpieces by numerous artists, such as Canova, Raphael, Tiziano and Caravaggio.
Another important name to be attributed to the Baroque style is certainly Borromini. If you are an art lover, you can’t miss the Borromini tour with the visit to some of the suggestive churches made by him, and you can find it in our “Private Tours” section.
