January 22nd is a remarkable day in the Area of Anzio because in 1944 a military operation occured there during World War II with the intention to outflank German forces and enable an attack on Rome. Anzio represented the pivot of the whole operation and it was also the center which suffered more damage. Indeed much of the city’s building heritage was destroyed or semi-destroyed. Nowadays a historical re-enactment of the event is organized by local people on that very same day wearing masks and celebrating all day long.
