An accessible tour on Vesuvius volcano, not far from Naples. Visit “Vesuvius volcano”, an extremely fascinating natural volcano rich of history. Our accessible “Vesuvius” tour is an half day private guided tour designated for wheelchair users.

The volcanic activity of “Mount Vesuvius”, called by the inhabitants of Naples “o Vesuvio”, dates back to more than 400.000 years ago. The name “Vesuvio” comes from the Sanskrit’s language and means “fire”. There are many legends linked to the volcano. ...

Some legends attribute the volcano to “the Greek god Zeus” and its “Mount Olympus”; others considered the mount as a divine punishment to the pagan community who lived below the mountain and believed that its eruptions were a consequence of God’s anger towards them and their aptitude.

The “Vesuvius Volcano”, with its 1.281 meters above the sea level, is part of a volcanic complex, which also includes “the Mount Somma”. After an eruption, the latter collapsed and created a caldera; from here, the Mount “Vesuvius”was born. The Mount is the symbol of the city of Naples and its gulf, as well as the other cities located on its slopes, and it is almost impossible to admire a postcard or a picture of “Naples” without noticing on the background the figure of the “Vesuvius”.

It is possible to divide into three main periods the history of the volcano: from its origin to the 79 a.C., when the ancient “Mount Somma” formed itself, but explosive eruptions destroyed it later; from the eruption of 79 a.C. to the one of 1631 a.C., and the last period is from 1631 until today. There have been several eruptions during the second phase, but the most significant is the one that took place in 79 a.C. In this event, several cities around the volcano (but only Pompeii and Herculaneum are mentioned when referring to the eruption) were covered first by layers of lava, and later by ashes and toxic gas, which killed the ones that had walked away.

Another violent eruption is the one that occurred in 1631 a.C., which triggered an intense effusive volcanic activity and then the volcano fell into a sleeping mode, during which it continues to be active. Researches and studies on this eruption have found out that the lava reached the sea, the ashes, released by the eruption, arrived up to Albania and the eruption itself caused the death of 40.000 people.
