A restaurant in Lecce, Puglia, can finally open after a 19-year delay, caused when its owner serendipitously discovered another world hidden underneath it while fixing his toilet. Eight years of digging later, the owner and his adult sons, Andrea, Marco and Davide Faggiano, had uncovered a treasure dating to the 5th Century BC. They found 5,000 pieces circa between coins, a gold bishop’s ring with 33 emerald stones, pottery, ceramic plates, children’s toys made of clay, statues and an underground tunnel leading to an amphitheatre. The discovery shines a light on the region’s former inhabitants through many different eras, including the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Some of the oldest artefacts were left by the Messapian tribe, which lived in Salento during ancient times. Since then, the trattoria was established in a different place and this ancient building has been converted into a museum, the Faggiano Museum.
